Beautiful & Traditional Greek Destination Wedding in Cyprus

Greek Island? Check. Sunshine? Check. Deep blue ocean? Check. Romance? You bet. Today we are lucky enough to be transported to Cyprus for Penelope and Edward’s big day, which took place on the 22nd of August 2015.

There is so much to love about this wedding, from the breathtaking traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony, to the bride’s funky blue Badgley Mischka shoes and the bridal party’s attire perfectly matching the stunning sea backdrop. After they were officially pronounced ‘Mr and Mrs’, Penelope and Edward celebrated in style with their loved ones at the Anassa Hotel. Their reception was held outdoors with plenty of twinkling lights, amazing food dishes (hello, three flavours of cake!) and dancing galore.

Edward ended their amazing day by impressing his lovely bride with some carefully-practised Greek incorporated into his speech and then even singing to her. Swoon!

THE PROPOSAL | Penny and Edward met at University in London and got together in the very salubrious venue known as The Verve in Leicester Square! They went to Rome for Penny’s birthday. Penny had wanted to go to Copenhagen, but you see Ed had already planned where the proposal was going to take place. As planned, Ed walked Penny to what he thought was the entrance to the Giancolo Hill (one of the seven hills that over looks Rome) but the park was just shutting! Ed was in a panic! Fortunately, this was not the entrance after all and after a steep walk they made it to the top. Penny didn’t complain, so Ed suspected she knew what was about to happen! Ed proposed under a tree at dusk. Beautiful.

THE VISION | A traditional Greek wedding with a modern twist. Classy and classic with olive green and white the prominent colour scheme.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Aurora Bridal in Cheam.

It was a Stella York gown. The style was really simple but my most important thing was having a low back. The material was mainly lace. The bridal shop has a policy that the dress is named after the first bride that purchases in the shop, so she is called ‘Penelope’!

I knew it was exactly what I wanted. I had tried on quite a few dresses, but think I felt really overwhelmed as I had gone with all my bridesmaids, but this one I found just with my mum.

My shoes were royal blue and by a designer called Badgley Mischka. I had a crown of flowers made by the florist which I loved and still have hanging up at home. My veil was purchased from Aurora bridal. It had lace details round the edges, which matched my dress.

My make-up artist was a family friend who lives in Cyprus and who I knew would do a great job. I didn’t want to look like a Geisha with a lot of make-up, which can be quite common for Greek weddings!

Hair was done by a local lady recommended by my mum, Maria! She was fantastic!

I really didn’t want too much make-up, but I wore a little more than usual which really made the difference in the pictures!

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Ed was really keen on not having a conventional outfit and wanted something slightly more causal to match the sunny Mediterranean environment. He wore white chino trousers, royal blue jacket and white shirt all from Reiss, a red tie by Richard James and pocket square by Eton. His shoes were Grenson.

I thought he looked extremely handsome and was so pleased that he had worn something that suited his personality!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We didn’t have any readings or music. We met at the front entrance of the Church, which is traditional at Greek Orthodox Weddings.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | 4 adult bridesmaids and a flower girl. My sister was my Matron of Honour. I had Ed’s sister and my two closest friends and my little cousin.

The dresses were by Sorella Vita and purchased from the same shop as my dress, Auora Bride in Cheam. They are royal blue, which suited all the girls beautifully. As I purchased my dress from the same shop, we got a 25% discount. The girls were asked to wear silver heels. As a gift, I bought them evil eye bracelets, which they wore on the day. They were purchased through Etsy from a boutique called ‘Arrow and Lustre‘.

THE FLOWERS | Local Greek florists did an amazing job – Flambouya Flower (who got exactly what we were looking for despite the language barrier!)

THE CAKE | Neither of us like icing, so we decided on a ‘naked cake’ which was made up of three different flavours – chocolate brownie, carrot and lemon drizzle. Of course, as mentioned already, the food was of huge importance; we wanted to go with traditional Cypriot dishes.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Jonny was superb and we’re so, so pleased with the photos. He was a lot of fun and not afraid to get in amongst the mayhem. His enthusiasm and eye for capturing those special moments were brilliant. We can’t recommend him enough!

THE HONEYMOON | We went on a mini-moon after the wedding week to Positano which was stunning. We are going to South Africa for Safari, followed by the Seychelles in June this year for the main honeymoon and we can’t wait!!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Our best memory is walking out of the church together and seeing all our family and friends together and happy that we had just tied the knot.

Dancing with everyone after the meal and speeches in the incredible outdoor environment of the Anassa Hotel was also a highlight. Ed saying some of his speech in Greek, which he’d been learning especially for the day! And also Ed singing to me in front of everyone was very romantic… and brave!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Make sure your dress and shoes are comfy! If you plan on dancing, have some flat shoes at the ready. Try and enjoy every minute and if you are feeling nervous for whatever reason, hopefully you are only going to get married once, so make the most of it. Everyone is rooting for you! If you are feeling you are getting stressed out, take a step back and remember what it is all about. Don’t lose sight of the end goal (being married to the person you love!) amongst all the smaller details.
